In the heart of historical Blacksburg, Virginia, the Farmer’s Market is more than just a place to buy local produce. It's a vibrant hub that fosters a sense of community, nurturing municipal sustainability and bridging the gap between local residents and freshly cultivated flora and produce.
The Blacksburg Farmer’s Market, a cherished tradition in the city for many years, offers a unique experience. With its limited opening hours on Wednesdays and Sundays, it becomes a special event, offering local goods that are not available throughout the week.
Business hours are Wednesdays from 2 pm to 6 pm and Saturdays from 8 am to 2 pm.
The Farmer’s market includes many local Blacksburg establishments. In the majority, the market pertains to fresh vegetables, homemade bagels, nonpreservative jams, and pesticide-free floral arrangements.
A kid-friendly and community-oriented event is most heavily populated on the weekend. Live music is also provided during the event to bing pleasure into the overall atmosphere and shopping experience.
Although the hours may be a conflict for scholars attending Virginia Tech, students attend the Blacksburg Farmer’s Market to distract themselves from other responsibilities and stay in touch with the community.
Some vendors at the market include Stonecrop Farms, Blacksburg Bagels, and Big Lick Ice Cream.
Gracie Barniak, junior attending Virginia Tech from Fredericksburg, Virginia is a Blacksburg Farmers Market regular. “If i were ever to set up my own booth here it would probably be homemade jewelry.” Barniak expressed the issue of not having many artisan crafts booths at the market could potentially increase the traffic flow for the market as a whole.
“The best thing I have ever gotten was probably the spicy pesto last semester, it was great,” stated Barniak. Gracie has been in attendance of the local market since her freshman year a Virginia Tech. She is usually present on the Wednesday event as it is less crowded and a more wholesome, zen experience.
